2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE350 SUV Exhaust Whine Explanation
Many drivers of the new 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV have been experiencing a whining noise from the exhaust of the car. If you too have been bothered by this noise, you are not alone, but you may need some extra information to help your local service department understand the problem.
The Noise
The sound has been labeled as a whining noise emitting from the exhaust in the back of the SUV. It comes and goes, but it is most prominent at low RPMs. At first, many drivers, and dealerships alike, were confusing this noise with new engine whine. When you buy a new vehicle of any make or model, you should be driving the car very gently for the first 600 miles or so. During the break-in period, cars will often make noises that eventually go away, but that isn’t the case for most GLE SUV and GLE Coupe drivers.
New Exhaust System
More likely than not, the noise you are hearing is a result of a new exhaust system in the GLE. Unlike the M-Class, the GLE uses a straight-pipe exhaust system. This kind of exhaust traditionally makes more power than other exhaust systems because shortens the distance the exhaust has to travel, but it is also associated with more noise.
Solution
With success, many customers are switching to an older exhaust system that was used in the M-Class. The only problem is that there is no recall yet for the issue. Mercedes-Benz doesn’t recognize this as a problem because so far it hasn’t affected the car’s performance in any way. Still, there is hope. We can’t promise every service center will be able to but there have been cases where the exhaust was replaced at no charge to the owner.
